Tie Dyed Shirts

The students enjoyed wearing their new shirts today. I'm planning to wash them again tonight so they'll be ready for our first field trip. I'll continue to keep them at school until the last field trip and then they can be kept at home.

Math Review

We reviewed for our first math test tomorrow!  If you have time, go over the math review page we completed in class today.  It's a great review for the test tomorrow.
Our math time begins with whole group instruction.  Then students have independent work time.  After they complete their math page, they can go to their assigned math station.  The students have been reviewing math facts with several math games.  They've been playing "3 in a Row" which is a great strategy game.  The students have been working on Xtramath.org at the computer.  When they're with me, we've been using tens and ones cubes to show understanding.

Social Studies

We've been comparing maps and globes.  We've been using the symbols and the compass rose on maps too.  Tomorrow we'll be talking about communities and neighborhoods.  This is a great time to check to see if your child remembers his/her address.

We sure had fun tie dying out t-shirts on Friday.  A special thank-you to our parent helpers!  Our shirts look great!

The Week in Review

Wow!  We've had a great week.  We've been building routines in reading, writing, word work, and math.  The students have been doing great with "Read to Self" and we're building stamina!  On Friday, the students read for 23 minutes without interruptions and distractions while I was listening to individual students read.  I'm so proud of their hard work!  The students have been writing about "Summer Fun" during Writer's Workshop. The students took their first spelling test and their new list will be coming home on Monday.

In math, we're working on numbers to 100.  The students have been learning different ways to write numbers like 23, 20 + 3, 2 tens and 3 ones.  We'll be finishing up this chapter on Monday and we'll review on Tuesday.  We'll have a test on Chapter 1 on Wednesday.
Have a great weekend!

Fun with Activotes

The students were reading numbers like eighty-four and learning to write the numbers three different ways like: 8 tens 4 ones, 80 + 4, and 84. The students liked using the Activotes to answer.

All Kinds of Groups

The students are learning about different groups in Social Studies. They drew two different groups they belonged to. Check out some of their work.

Curriculum Night

It was great seeing all the parents tonight at Curriculum Night.  Thanks so much for coming. As I was driving home, I realized I told you about the rest of my family yet, I didn't mention my son Sean.  (You know the "mommy guilt" sets in so I thought I'll mention it here.)  He's a Lindbergh grad and he's a senior at Trine University.  He's studying computer engineering and he plays on their lacrosse team.

Again, your children are absolutely adorable and they're off to a great start in 2nd grade.

Spelling/Word Work

Your child brought home a spelling list yesterday and the first spelling test will be on Friday, August 24th.  For the first 3 weeks of school, all students will have the same list.  The list includes high frequency words that I expect students to spell correctly in all upcoming written work.  Over the next 3 weeks, I'll be teaching the students the spelling routines and choices.
See you all at 6:30 for Curriculum Night tomorrow!

Sorting Numbers

The students sorted the numbers into odd and even. I think the flipchart fun was the best part of the whole day. We learned about the Interactive Whiteboard tools and practiced some 2nd grade skills.

Making Equations

It sure was fun to make number sentences on the board.r

Moving Objects

The students learned how to slide them into the correct order. Sometimes the sliding gets a little tricky.

Moving Objects

The students practiced moving these objects from smallest to largest.

More Highlights

We changed the color of the highlighter for each different rhyme.

More Fun

Some students used a really thick line.

Fun with Flipcharts

The students enjoyed taking turns to write the first letter of their name. They changed the pen color and the thickness of the lines.
