More Pumpkin Fun

We hope you enjoy our writing.

Pumpkin Fun

We borrowed little pumpkins from Mrs. Heller so we could use adjectives to describe them. We also wrote pumpkin poems by adding adjectives. Enjoy the pictures.

Happy Halloween!

Enjoy your evening and don't worry about homework tonight!  I told the students their homework was to have fun and collect a lot of candy!

Here's a few friends from the Halloween Bash tonight. It was great seeing everyone! The photo booth was lots of fun too!

Buddy Activity

Each student wrote a thank you to all the veterans and then with the help of our 5th grade buddies we created decorations for Veterans Day. You'll get to see them on Friday, November 9th at our assembly. Here's a preview.

Flat Stanley

Our Flat Stanleys are ready for their vacation. Please send in your addressed, stamped envelope as soon as possible. We can't wait to learn about the different places in our country.

100 Marble Celebration on Friday

The whole class has been working hard to earn 100 marbles and it finally happened today. The students voted and they would like a "Show and Tell" Day which means students can bring anything from home to show the class.  Whatever they bring, should be able to fit inside a back pack. I also told them it must be okay with their parents too. It should be an interesting Friday.

My Pet Monster

The students made pet monsters and wrote about them. Since we've been learning about adding adjectives to our writing, the pet monster stories are filled with great describing words. Check out a few here and be sure to find your child's writing when you're at Long for Parent-Teacher conferences next week.

Rainy Day Recess

The students love indoor recess!  There's lots of things to build and create. Check out some of the fun things they built today.

Our Zoo Trip

We had fun looking at all the animals we've learned about in science. We saw a cute lion family in Big Cat Country. We saw giraffes and zebras too. We walked through the bird house and saw some really cool birds up close. We learned a lot in our animal class "Habitat is Home" because we learned about North American animals and their habitats. The students touched an owl, a turtle and a snake. Ask your child what they learned on the trip.

Be sure to have your child dress for the weather.  We will be walking around the zoo before taking our class called "Habitat is Home".

Butterflies

It was a nice warm afternoon so we let our butterflies go. One butterfly just wanted a little more juice from Michael's orange slice before flying off. We're hoping they'll lay eggs this weekend so the life cycle continues.

Exciting Xtramath News

I'm so proud of Brian as he has completed addition and subtraction on Xtramath!  I'm so proud of Kai and Lucas because they have finished addition on Xtramath. When I asked the boys how they did it, they said they practiced Xtramath at home everyday except Sunday.  I have several students getting close to finishing addition and they're motivated to practice more at home. Great work boys!

Our Beautiful Butterflies

The students have enjoyed watching the life cycle of a butterfly. Our butterflies are very active and they love the nectar from oranges. We willl be letting them go on Friday.

Social Studies News

We started Unit 2 today and we talked about our home address.  We used Google Earth to find our homes. The students were excited to "fly" from home to home.  In this unit, we'll be learning about our state, country and continent.  We'll be making a continent map tomorrow.  Ask your child if he/she knows their state, country, and continent.

We Have Butterflies!

The students have enjoyed watching our little caterpillars turn into beautiful butterflies.  When the caterpillars arrived they were very tiny. We measured them as they grew from 1 c.m. to 5 c.m.  We were excited when the caterpillars climbed to the top of our jar and were hanging like the letter j.  Sometime on October 4th or October 5th, they were all in a chrysalis!  We patiently waited and when we arrived at school yesterday we had 3 butterflies. Then throughout the day a few more emerged and we now have 6 butterflies.  They like the juice from an orange slice.  We'll continue to observe them this week and let them go by Friday!

Subtraction Strategies

The students are working hard learning the subtraction strategies.  Students can use Touch Math to count back.  I sent a Touch Math packet home for your child to practice at home.  If you child has the subtraction facts memorized, please do not have them practice Touch Math as that will slow them down.  If your child needs a numberline to subtract or still uses his/her fingers to subtract, Touch Math is a great alternative.
We practiced fact families and related facts today.  Please continue to have your child practice the addition facts on Xtramath.org as this will help with subtraction.  We'll continue to practice the subtraction strategies this week and we'll have a text on Chapter 6 on Tuesday, Oct. 23rd.
I will be giving an addition and subtraction timed tests this week as we finish up first quarter.  Next quarter, there will be a mix of easy facts and hard facts on the timed tests.

Our Class Moodle

The students enjoy using the Moodle to access links to different websites.  To get to our Moodle you have to log into Lindbergh's Cloud.  There's a link on my website page.  The students know their log ins and passwords.
Students can access our online textbooks through the Moodle.  Once you're in Our Class Moodle there's a link to the math, science and social studies textbooks.  The log in and password information is listed there too.
Also, in Our Class Moodle, I've set up a Kid Blog if students want to write stories for other students in our class to read.  Here's a link to Kid Blog.  Your child should find his/her name and the password is his/her lunch pin.  We'll begin using it in class tomorrow and it might take a few days until your child has class time to write their first story.  They can access it at home too.

Math & Science

We reviewed the addition strategies today so the students should be ready for the Chapter 5 math test tomorrow.  Your child can practice his/her math facts on Xtramath.org.
We are learning about animal groups and life cycles.  We will finish the last lesson in the chapter tomorrow.  I will send home review sheets on Wednesday and the Science Chapter 2 test is Friday, October 12th.

Reading and Writing

We've been writing text-to-self and text-to-text connections in our Reading Response Journals.  The students have great ideas and are making great connections.  This week, we'll be talking about text-to-world connections.  I've been reminding the students about capital letters at the beginning of the sentence and periods at the end of the each sentence.  The students have been erasing and fixing their work.  Starting this week, you might start seeing some papers the say "Retrain your Brain".  Students will be using this paper to rewrite sentences with a capital letters and periods so it becomes automatic.  In the beginning, I have a lot of students who have to rewrite and after awhile I have very few students rewriting because they have "retrained their brain".

Today I'm sending home a reading test that your child took last week.  You can review the reading test with your child and talk about any errors.  During the reading test, students were able to ask if they didn't know a word.  I encouraged students to reread the story if they weren't sure of an answer and we talked about reading all of the answer choices before choosing an answer.

During Writer's Workshop over the last few weeks, we've been writing about family fun and "it happened to me" stories.  I taught them how to use a graphic organizer to organize their thoughts before writing.  We've been talking about adding interesting details to their stories and last week we added sound words to our stories.  We've talked a lot a capital letters at the beginning of every sentence and a period at the end of every sentence.  We've also been practicing writing complete sentences.  Today, I'm sending home the writing assessment for 1st quarter. The writing assessment was given over two days and students were encouraged to use their 2nd grade dictionary if they needed help with spelling.

Addition Strategies

We've been working on addition strategies all week. The students have learned about "counting on" and many students have tried using touchpoints. The students have learned about "doubles" and "doubles + 1". We've been practicing "making 10" with a Target 10 game and a Pick up 10 game. Ask your child to show you how to play Pick up 10 with a regular deck of cards. The students having been using the Activotes to practice the addition facts to 20. Ask your child what level they are on now. The students learned about problem solving today with story boxes to practice "putting together" word problems.  Be sure to have your child work on fact fluency on Xtramath.org.  Check out a few pictures from this week.
