Math News

The students have been working hard as they learn to subtract 2 digit numbers with regrouping. This is a difficult concept for some students. Today we learned how to check our subtraction with addition and that was tricky for some students as they had to remember how to add 2 digit numbers with regrouping. Your child might need a little extra practice at home. We will be finishing the chapter this week and the test will be on Tuesday, December 4th. Since we were working on this hard concept, we were using gel pens to make it more fun! A special thank you to those who donated the gel pens!

Making Fossils

The students enjoyed making fossils with play dough and seashells. We reviewed for the test tomorrow with our Activotes too.

Flat Stanley Update

Flat Stanley has been traveling all over the United States. We enjoy getting the postcards, pictures and news of his travels. We're learning about so many different places in our country.

Xtramath News

Wow! Gabe finished addition yesterday and is on subtraction. Kai and Brian finished multiplication on Xtramath and are now on division. I'm so proud of my hard working students. Many students are still working away at addition and that's great. Our class goal is for all students to finish addition by March. Keep up the good work!

Library Skills

Mrs. Czaicki showed the students the nonfiction area today. She read the story "Librarian on the Roof" about a real librarian. The students also made some crazy pictures on the computer.

Silly Turkey Stories

The students wrote a silly animal story about a turkey. They also made a little turkey too.  Of course, we're adding adjectives to make the story more interesting. We're also capitalizing names of people and places.
Have a Happy Thanksgiving!

Science Activity

Yesterday we took sugar cubes and looked at them with a hand lense. We noticed the straight edges and pointy corners. Then we put them in a jar and shook the jar for a minute. We took out the sugar cubes and they now had round edges. We talked about how what happened to the sugar cubes also happens to rocks. It's just like weathering and erosion.
Check out our pictures.

Learning 2 digit Subtraction

We used unifix cubes today to show how to subtract 2 digit numbers with regrouping. We will continue to practice with cubes this week before moving to just paper & pencil.

Making Inferences

We are learning about making inferences about what characters are thinking and feeling. I read a story about Mary Jo and the students used their Activotes to text in their answers about what she was thinking or feeling at different times during the story.

Week in Review

Reading Workshop - The students have been working hard and building stamina during our read to self time.    The students are working on visualizing which is the mental image or picture that pops into your mind as you're reading.  This is so important as students move to higher reading levels.

Writers Workshop - Last week, the students wrote How to Carve a Pumpkin.  The  students used time order words and great describing words as they wrote the steps to carving a pumpkin..  Right now, the paragraphs are hanging up at school and I'll send them home next week.  This week we've been reading silly animal stories and the students have been writing silly animals stories.  We also read "My Little Sister Ate One Hare" which is another silly story and some students have begun writing silly little brother and/or sister stories.

Math News - The students have been working hard learning how to add two digit numbers with regrouping.  They are doing great!  The students learned about estimating sums and solving word problems.  Some math groups practiced adding 3 digit numbers since they're doing so great with 2-digit numbers.  We'll review the chapter on Monday and we'll have a test on Tuesday, November 13th.  Our next chapter is on subtracting 2-digit numbers with regrouping.

Social Studies - We finished up Unit 2 on Places Near and Far. As you know, we sent out our Flat Stanleys and we're waiting for their return so we can see the places he's been while on vacation.  So far, we've learned a little more about Chicago, IL, North Carolina, and Lenexa, KS.

Science - We're starting Chapter 5 - "Exploring Earth's Surface".  We'll be learning about changes in the Earth's surface like weathering and erosion.  We'll also be learning about rocks and fossils.  During this unit, students may bring in their rock collections.

My goal for all of my students is to finish addition by February or March so they can be working on subtraction. I don't expect my students to get to multiplication until 3rd grade.
