We've been learning about tally tables, bar graphs and pictographs. We reviewed in class today and the Chapter 4 test will be tomorrow, Sept. 27th.
You child can access the 2nd grade Moodle by logging into Lindbergh's cloud.  The students are getting really good at logging in now.  There are math games and activities for each math chapter.  Check out the links to Chapter 4 math.

They can also find links to websites that have games that go with the math lessons.  If you have time this weekend, they can check out the links to Math Chapter 3. Have a great weekend!

September 11th

I know YOU all remember where you were 11 years ago. My students weren't even born yet. I shared this book with them this afternoon. It was written by a retired Lindbergh teacher, Mrs. Debbie Nelson-Linck. Before retiring last year, she left me these books to share with my class this year. We spoke briefly about September 11th today and I hope your family enjoys the book as we remember the heroes we lost on this tragic day in 2001.

Place Value War at a Math Station

We are comparing numbers to 100 and the students are playing Place Value War with Uno cards. The students sit side by side and turn over a card for the tens and the ones. They read their numbers and decide which one is greater and the student with the greater number gets all the cards. They continue playing until we are out of time or someone is out of cards. Here's a few pictures.

Reading

We've been working on "making connections" in reading.  Good readers make meaningful connections as they read.  We've been talking about connections every day and this week the students have been writing their connections in their Reading Response Journal. After reading aloud and discussing Sheila Rae the BraveShy Charles and "Check Your Manners", the students wrote their own connection.

Here's one more connection that one student made all by herself after reading a story called Biscuit's Picnic during "Read to Self" time.   I like it when students are excited about reading and writing and they do a little extra all on their own!

Social Studies

We've been talking about urban areas, rural areas, and suburbs.  The students made Venn Diagrams to show how urban areas and rural areas are alike and different.  Hopefully you'll have a little time this weekend or on Monday evening to review Unit 1 with your child before the test on Tuesday, Sept. 11th.

Writing

The students have been writing several stories about "Places They Like to Go" just like Donald Crews does in Big Mama's.  We read more about the author Donald Crews yesterday. He likes to sketch places and things that he likes and then he turns those sketches into stories.  Today, we took a little walk around Long and sketched some things on the patio and on the playground and we're going to turn those ideas into stories next week. Check out a few more stories about Places "We Like to Go":

We also reviewed for the Social Studies test today.  I sent home the Social Studies book so your child can review unit 1 before the test on Tuesday, September 11th.

Goal Setting

The students wrote goals for September. Some students wrote goals about math facts, handwriting, and reading. Ask your child what goals he/she has for the month of September. It might be something you can help them with at home.

We've been writing about favorite places. Check out a few of our stories.

Week in Review

The students have been working hard and building stamina in "Reading to Self".  Our record time of reading without anyone getting up, talking, and/or not reading is 24 minutes!  That's absolutely awesome!  They're building their reading skills!  During this time, I've been meeting with individual students and checking on their reading level now, compared to where they were at the end of 1st grade.  Next week, I'll be checking in with students again before deciding on groups. We're hoping to start reading groups the week of Sept. 10th.

In math, the students are practicing counting forward and backward to 100.  They're also working on number patterns and skip-counting by 2's, 3's, 4's, 5's, and 10's to 100. Next week, they'll be learning about odd and even numbers and finding a pattern in a list of numbers.  We'll review on Thursday and the Chapter 2 Test will be on Friday, Sept. 7th.

In Social Studies, the students are learning about urban, suburban, and rural areas.  We're talking about how they are alike and different.

Have a great weekend!
