We've been working on "making connections" in reading. Good readers make meaningful connections as they read. We've been talking about connections every day and this week the students have been writing their connections in their Reading Response Journal. After reading aloud and discussing Sheila Rae the Brave, Shy Charles and "Check Your Manners", the students wrote their own connection. 
Here's one more connection that one student made all by herself after reading a story called Biscuit's Picnic during "Read to Self" time. I like it when students are excited about reading and writing and they do a little extra all on their own!
